On 30th and 31st October, Julieanne and Katie from the Curlew Connections project were joined by Bangor University Zoology students to conduct the university local field course. With 21 students on day one and 22 on day two, it was a great opportunity to show the students the species and habitats right on their doorstep.

The beautifully located Dovey Valley Shooting Ground hosted the inaugural Welsh Side by Side Championship organised by Peter Croft, ex-Olympic coach. Held on 8 October, the day was blessed with lovely weather and a turnout from as far afield as the Midlands and South Wales.

The GWCT’s Head of Education and Advisor for Wales and Northwest England, Matt Goodall, was invited on Jeremy Vine’s BBC Radio 2 show on 17 October to explain why the ban on all types of snare in Wales could be bad news for wildlife in the country. He was up against Shahinoor Alom, League Against Cruel Sports’ Public Affairs Officer in Wales.

An annual fundraiser was held in aid of GWCT by their South East Wales Committee, chaired by Roger Thomas and vice-chair Philip Yapp, on Thursday September 21st, held at the iconic Cefn Tilla Court.

The inaugural Agriculture Act to emerge from Wales has officially received Royal Assent. While the national headlines of the Act are about the proposed Sustainable Farming Scheme (SFS), those in the gamekeeping and conservation communities have been dealt a huge blow with the banning of all snares, including the GWCT-devised humane cable restraint.

The third day of the 2023 Royal Welsh Show saw the official launch of the Curlew Connections Project, a project aiming to drive curlew recovery in Wales by working with conservation organisations, farmers, landowners and local communities.
