The prizegiving for the annual Perth & Kinross Schools art competition, organised by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust and sponsored by Julian Jardine Art Studio, Blackadders Solicitors and Dunkeld House Hotel, took place in the AK Bell Library, Perth, on Thursday 24 November. Over 400 youngsters entered the competition for which the brief is to create a piece of art depicting a game species from the British Isles. There were 18 prizewinners in all, with the overall prizes in both the junior and senior school groups going to Morrison’s Academy, Crieff.
The Blackadders Quaich for the overall winning entry in the senior category was awarded to Flori Mitchell, Morrison’s Academy, for her dynamic interpretation of a pheasant in full flight. The Michael Wolfe-Murray Perpetual Trophy for the overall winning entry in the junior category was awarded to both Charlotte Medley for her watercolour painting of a deer and Leah Strickland for her stunning portrait of a hare, both also from Morrison’s Academy.
The certificates to the winners and all the runners-up were presented by Bob Band, Councillor for Lifelong Learning and Depute Provost, Perth and Kinross Council; prizes were awarded by Nicola Porter of Blackadders and Terri McAllister of Dunkeld House Hotel; and trophies awarded by Julian Jardine.
Sheena Stewart of the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, organiser of the competition, said: “The competition is now in its 12th year. We had a really impressive entry of more than 400 separate pieces and some wonderful and inspired art created by the youngsters. As ever, our thanks go to our sponsors and those donating prizes as well as Perth & Kinross Council’s Education and Children’s Services departments. Without them all, and not least all the enthusiastic young artists, this event would not be the annual success that it has become.”
