Introducing other plants into short rotation coppice willow.
Abstract
Eighteen species of shade tolerant plants were introduced into a short rotation coppice willow plot in Wiltshire, England. The establishment and spread of these species was assessed in a replicated experiment. Brachypodium sylvaticum, Circaea lutetiana, Carex sylvatica, Geranium robertianum, Glechoma hederacea and Poa trivialis achieved a cover of more than 5% during the first season. The establishment of a stable ground flora beneath SRC willow is discussed in terms of the benefits which may be provided to the crop, the grower and the environment.
