Abstract

In the UK, there are three Government-funded Conservation Schemes that provide financial payments to farmers who wish to manage their field margins sympathetically for game and wildlife. Here, field margins are defined as the field boundary itself (hedge, fence, wall etc.), the perennial, non-woody, semi-natural vegetation at its base and the outermost edge of the adjacent crop.
The Schemes are:
1. Management prescriptions within Environmentally Sensitive Areas
2. The Countryside Stewardship Scheme
3. The Arable Area Payment Scheme - (incorporating Set-aside management)
