Abstract

1. The results of a management questionnaire survey of 356 upland grouse moors is presented in relation to a broad division of habitat types.
2. On ombrogenous mires 73% of estates carried sheep densities greater than the maximum acceptable density for the maintenance of vegetation.
3. Drainage had occurred on 74% of estates but was probably the result of high grant aid.
4. Management techniques used on dwarf-shrub heath were used to the same extent on the more sensitive ombrogenous mires.
