Local people joined liverymen of the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers on 24 March 2022 at the Allerton Project in Loddington, Leicestershire, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the pioneering research and demonstration farm. Five new pear trees were planted in Allerton’s Community Heritage Apple Orchard to mark the project’s birthday and commemorate HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

A new wildlife cover crop seed mix, which promises to be one of the best yet for biodiversity, has been developed by scientists at the GWCT. The ‘Wildlife Plot’ mix is available through the government-funded Sustainable Farming Incentive Test and Trial pilot scheme and is expected to be incorporated into the future Environmental Land Management Schemes (ELMS), enabling farmers to make space for nature alongside modern farming.

This International Women’s Day (8 March), the GWCT, is highlighting the contribution of women to science and land-based careers, where they have been traditionally under-represented.

A prominent Welsh farmer is laying down the gauntlet to Mark Drakeford and the rest of Welsh government if they are to secure a brighter future for the nation. Gareth Wyn Jones was speaking on the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust’s YouTube channel in a special broadcast to raise awareness for the wonderful work being done by those looking after the Welsh landscape.
