Owen Williams Bio
Owen Williams spent his childhood living on a sheep farm in west Wales. Owen started wildfowling adventures of his own and soon started fishing on his local river. It was through these ventures into the field that he started learning about the natural world and coming from an artistic family he was soon painting pictures of the wildlife he encountered.
For the last 38 years he has become established as one of our leading wildlife artists and one of just a few who paint purely in watercolour. Today many of his paintings are included in major private collections in the UK, Europe and America. In 2004 he was commissioned by the Royal Household to paint a picture for Prince William’s 21st birthday.
In recent years Owen has become increasingly involved in conservation and in 2007 became involved in ringing and tagging woodcock to learn more about this much valued quarry species and to help ensure that we were shooting them sustainably. He set up the Woodcock Network with the aim of getting more people ringing woodcock and as a result the numbers ringed each year has increased from a few dozen in 2007 to over 2000 today. Working closely with the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust on woodcock he is a co-author of three peer reviewed papers on the species.
His artwork has been used to illustrate many books and periodicals including the ‘Artist’s Impressions’ series which he also co-authored. He also regularly writes articles on conservation and land management issues in several countryside publications such as Fieldsports Journal. In 2021 he became the Welsh chairman and a trustee of the GWCT.
