Euston Estate
Euston Estate, the seat of the Dukes of Grafton and currently the home of the 12th Duke, extends to approximately 10,500 acres. Various commercial and charitable activities take place on the Estate, which since 2017 has been the chosen location for the prestigious East Anglian Game and Country Fair. The Estate has a substantial and varied in hand farming operation extending to over 7,000 acres, forestry extending to around 1,500 acres and a number of sites of special scientific interest.
The Euston shoot is one of the most renowned in Britain. It was famous in the early 1900s for inventing the ‘Euston System’, a programme which incubated wild grey partridge eggs under bantams to increase wild bird stocks. Wild game bird shooting continued until the 1990s when changes in agriculture and the demand for larger bags left no alternative to rearing large numbers. The shoot currently employs two full-time game keepers and shoots 42 days a year.
Shooting and conservation go hand in hand and as a result the Estate boasts a wide range of habitats. Many of the rarest species found in the Breckland area can be found on the Estate, including large colonies of White Admiral Butterflies in Fakenham Wood and the iconic Stone Curlew. The Estate attempts to farm in an environmentally sensitive way and in recent years has turned as many areas as possible into wildlife sites, with wild seed mixes planted specifically to assist the wild game and songbird populations.
