Skelton Estate
Skelton Estate (which is the core part of Skelton & Gilling Estates) extends to approximately 10,000 acres with the keepered area of moorland covering approximately 2,400 acres and consists of Stanghow, Moorsholm and Gerrick Moors.
The Moors are located on the northern fringe of the North York Moors National Park and adjoin Commondale and Danby along its southern boundary.
The moor is owned by Anthony Wharton and has historically been shot on a private basis with friends. The moor is managed by Neil Colver (Resident Agent) and keepered by John Suckling (since 2022).
The moor is a SSSI, SPA and SAC but is not a common with the grazing rights let to one tenant.
The moor is split almost 50/50 between wet heath and dry heath with extensive bracken and grip blocking taking place over the last four years under the current Stewardship Scheme.
The current 10 year average on the moor is 130 brace and the five year average is 94 brace. There are nine lines of Butts and three rows of hurdles allowing shooting in most wind directions.
In 2023, if grouse numbers allow, a limited number of days will be let for the first time.
Colin Gibson will give a short insight about his work with monitoring the barn owl population across the Estate and the East Cleveland Barn Owl Nest Box Network.
The meeting place is Lockwood Beck reservoir, use the post code TS12 3LQ or What3Words salmon.wedding.prayers. There will be some walking on the moor and 4x4 vehicles with reasonable ground clearance will be required, although sharing vehicles is encouraged. The walk is expected to finish at 7.30pm followed by refreshments provided by the Estate.
