Black grouse are disappearing

By Andrew Hoodless, GWCT Head of Research

Black grouse are vanishing from our landscape. Once found across much of the UK, these remarkable birds are now restricted to only a few areas.

We urgently need your help. With your support, our scientists can gather crucial data to guide conservation efforts and translocate birds to suitable habitats.

200 years ago, black grouse inhabited every county in England but they are now only found in four counties – Northumberland, Cumbria, North Yorkshire and Durham. Your support can help bring them back.

Just £20 could fund an hour of data analysis, while £190 could fund a VHF radio tag to monitor their movements.

Your contribution will directly support our Black Grouse Translocation Project, restoring these birds to areas where they once thrived. Together, we can ensure future generations experience the magic of seeing black grouse in the wild.

Please, donate today to help us save black grouse:

Climate

200 years ago the climate was a lot colder. This is part of why every county in England had black grouse. They've basically been saying a long goodbye to southern parts of their range since the little ice age and conservation focus should be where the climate is still right for them now and in the next 50 years.

Unshackle the keepers and let them control the predators, foxes, crows, stoats etc etc.
