Unlock the benefits of species-rich grassland: your guide to the first endorsed SFI action

Srg

Defra have announced that the first endorsed action under the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) is now live. GRH6, which focuses on managing priority habitat species-rich grassland, is officially available on GOV.UK. Here's what you need to know to get started.

What are endorsed actions?

Under SFI, certain actions require special approval because they target priority habitats, species, or heritage features. These are known as endorsed actions. When you apply for an endorsed action like GRH6, the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) will notify Natural England or Historic England to review your land's suitability.

For GRH6, Natural England will assess whether your land qualifies as species-rich grassland or has the potential to become one. This endorsement is crucial for ensuring that you have the guidance needed to manage these valuable habitats effectively.

Why GRH6 matters

Species-rich grassland is more than just a pretty landscape. It’s a vital ecosystem supporting a diverse range of wildflowers, plants, invertebrates, and birds. Here’s why GRH6 is essential:

  • Biodiversity boost: Helps maintain and improve the biodiversity of grasslands.
  • Wildlife support: Benefits species like bumblebees, butterflies, birds, and bats.
  • Soil health: Keeps soil healthy and carbon-rich, playing a role in preventing erosion.
  • Cultural heritage: Supports traditional farming practices like haymaking.

GRH6 is a five-year commitment, with a payment of £646 per hectare per year. It’s a static action, meaning you’ll need to manage the same area consistently throughout the duration.

How to apply

Applying for GRH6 is straightforward:

  • Review the guidelines on GOV.UK.
  • Submit an expression of interest through the Rural Payments service.
  • Await an invitation from the RPA to apply for an agreement.

With 102 actions now available through SFI, there’s never been a better time to explore how sustainable practices can benefit your farm and the environment.
