The Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust has been conserving the UK's wildlife for decades. But why do people join? Recently, we asked members for their stories about what made them join.
One member shared a story from the hot summer of 1976 when they spent a day with Dick Potts, looking at grey partridges on the South Downs. The member was deeply impressed with the GWCT's work then, just as they are today. They believe that the Trust's science-based conservation work and advice is ‘the best in the business’ and that everyone who shoots should support the Trust.
One particularly novel story came from a member whose interest in the GWCT started when they bought a game farm in Rhodesia and ran into problems. They turned to the GWCT for advice and had a wonderful morning with Charles Coles, who was enthusiastic about their project. After moving to the UK, they joined the Dorset Committee and sat on it for years, organising various local gundog events for the Trust.
‘I believe in truth and honesty and the making of decisions based on that foundation’, wrote another member, citing the importance of our role in giving objective evidence to authorities so that the right decisions on policy are made, and falsehoods can be challenged with hard sound evidence.
The GWCT's work is crucial in preserving the UK's wildlife, and these members' stories show how the Trust has helped and continues to help individuals and communities. If you're passionate about conservation, wildlife, and truth, why not consider joining the GWCT? By becoming a member, you'll support the Trust's research and conservation work and help preserve the UK's wildlife for future generations.
