The inaugural Agriculture Act to emerge from Wales has received Royal Assent and now active.
While the national headlines of the Act are about the future of agriculture in Wales, those who have been managing foxes have been dealt a huge blow with the banning of all snares, including the GWCT-devised humane cable restraint. As of 17th August it will be illegal to set any kind of snare or Humane Cable Restraint. Despite many evidence submissions, face-to-face meetings, and briefing documents, we were unable to convince the Minister to remove this from the Act.
Sue Evans, Director of GWCT Cymru, is worried about the impact this decision will have on conservation and any future research into foxes. “After having invested so many thousands of hours developing this AIHTS-approved humane trapping device, we’re sad that Welsh Government has chosen to ignore the science”, says Sue. “This is a huge blow for ground-nesting birds. From 17th August, protecting these birds, most of which are red and amber-listed, will become much harder”.
