James Mawle is passionate about the red-listed black grouse. In 1998 there were only 773 males left in England, but thanks to a conservation project involving land managers on a landscape-scale and joint-led by the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, the decline was reversed.

Spring 2020 has been a very different year for members of the GWCT Wetlands team, as it has been for all of us. 

At the start of July, we set out a challenge, to find 500 new members before the end of the year. I’m delighted to say that, a little over two weeks later, 100 of you have risen to that challenge and signed up.

COVID-19 threatened to cancel long-term fieldwork. Luckily enough, there was one team left at the GWCT that could take on the challenge – two students who didn’t know what they were signing up for.
