Sir, Since Michael Gove’s department has successfully justified the United Kingdom’s legal approach to killing pest birds to the European Union every year since at least 1996, it is eminently more sensible to reinstate a system that works rather than redesign it (Gove may relent on pigeons amid outrage over shooting licences, May 10). BBC presenter Chris Packham may not like the way crops, livestock and wildlife are protected in this country, but the European Union have previously been quite clear that “none of the UK derogations is in apparent conflict with the protection of these species”.
