Benefits of game shooting shouldn’t be disregarded: Our letter published in The Times

Sir, Reminiscing about the past can be fun but Duncan Heenan (letter, June 15) should remember that game shooting is now more popular and accessible than before; because it has embraced change. Where conservation best practice is being followed, wildlife is also enjoying this new golden era. Our scientific studies found 30% more songbirds on farms with shoots; woodland managed for pheasants had a similar increase. With a comprehensive RSPB review, also concluding “the positive effects of habitat management are likely to result in a positive net conservation impact”, the future for both game and our wildlife remains bright.

The public aren’t being told about the vital good work being done in the British countryside by land managers. Their contribution is criminally overlooked and we want to help tell their story.
