RSPB should support hen harrier recovery plan: Our letter to The Telegraph

The RSPB told Parliament in 2016 that grouse moors should be regulated using a licensing system similar to that used for fishing rods. It is bizarre that the RSPB is now suggesting such a taxation scheme will also end the proven conflict between hen harriers and grouse moors (Scotland's grouse moors are 'in a good place' despite a poor season and calls for reform, Dec 4). In contrast, the Government has implemented a hen harrier recovery plan that does address the conflict in England. Ironically, the RSPB is taking the Government to court this week to try and prevent plans to recover a species they claim to champion.

Testimonials from members

"Belonging to an organisation that is so dedicated to preserving the countryside makes me proud to be doing my bit. The perks that come with it are just the icing on the cake."

"My GWCT membership is worth every penny. The Trust benefit from my contribution and I get to attend some fantastic events."

"The membership is worth every penny for the work the GWCT do at the Allerton Project alone."

"Initially I supported the GWCT as it scientifically provided best practice for the rural environment. Having got to know the organisation better two other significant branches have become evident. Very wide ranging rural research from water voles and woodcock to soil run off and headland strips. Active political lobbying defending the rural way of life that is under increasing threat from ignorance."

Proposed Hen Harrier Recovery Plan

at 12:18 on 07/12/2018 by Jack Orchel

The proposed Hen Harrier recovery plan should be implemented in England for a limited trial period, say 5 years, to allow data to be gathered carefully for rigorous scientific analysis. Dogmatic opposition to such a trial by any organisation would appear to question the validity of adopting a science-based approach to conservation of this avian species.
