Through pioneering camera work, narration and cinematography, Silverback Films producer, Chris Howard, harnessed the filming skills of Richard Davies to bring new attention to the ‘King of Fish’.

The ‘Freshwater’ episode of Wild Isles, which was released on 2 April 2023, highlighted the stark reality that, in Sir David Attenborough’s words, “returning [wild Atlantic] salmon numbers have fallen by 70% in just 25 years… [and] at the current rate of decline, they may disappear from all our rivers in as little as 20 years’ time. The grandchildren of these fish may be the last to make this astonishing journey.”

Following on from the episode, this online event will showcase a selection of incredible and previously unseen salmon footage, and interview the Wild Isles team about the process of documenting these remarkable creatures on film.

From egg, to parr, to smolt and returning adult, the team will share a selection of stunning footage, talk through the processes involved in capturing each of these life stages, describe the threats facing salmon at each of these points in their life, and share news on how the Missing Salmon Alliance is working towards a brighter future for this iconic species.

Dylan Roberts, Head of Fisheries for the GWCT, said: “The inclusion of wild Atlantic salmon in the BBC series Wild Isles was a significant step forward in raising public awareness of the decline of this iconic species, and the importance of the habitats which are their home. The activities of the MSA members, to protect wild salmon and their habitats, ranges from the chalk streams of southern England to the highland rivers of Northern Scotland. Never before have we had the resources to film this species in such detail. I urge GWCT members, and those of our partner organisations, to register for this event.”

The event will be hosted by Jonathon Muir, from the MSA member the Atlantic Salmon Trust.

This is a free event, with the option to make a donation to the Missing Salmon Alliance.
