Martha Hayes

EFG Regional Officer, Northern Lincs

Martha HayesWith a background in communications, prior to joining the EFG team Martha worked as Head of Stakeholder Engagement for the Royal Agricultural Society of England and Innovation for Agriculture. She has a keen interest in Net Zero solutions for the UK agricultural sector and is BASIS-certified in Greenhouse Gases, Carbon and Climate Change Mitigation. Alongside her role at EFG, Martha is a director in the family farming business, which is an arable and beef enterprise north of Lincoln.

What is your favourite GWCT initiative or project?

My role is within the Environmental Farmers Group, an organisation supported by GWCT. We’re doing some really exciting things in the Natural Capital space, working to develop and support farmer co-operatives enabling mechanisms to trade. Under this umbrella I am really enjoying working on the Northern Lincs carbon baselining project. This will involve us helping farmers to assess their carbon emissions and sequestration potential, enabling us to then work with corporates along the Humber Estuary to develop potential offsetting markets.

What is the best thing about your job?

As a farmer myself, I really enjoy working with EFG farmers both locally and nationally to support with solutions and opportunities, particularly during a period of so much change for the UK agricultural industry.

What advice would you give your younger self?

Not to worry about job stereotypes! I have always wanted to farm but I used to be quite shy telling people as it wasn’t an obvious ‘girls’ job. Once I got to university, I soon realised that there was a whole industry of incredible women working in agriculture. I have had so much encouragement and support and I believe that the UK agricultural industry is a hugely positive and exciting space to work in, regardless of gender.
