Isabel Bamford

Student, Farmland Ecology Unit

Isabel BamfordIsabel Bamford is one of GWCT’s new Farmland Ecology placement students for 2024-25. Isabel is studying Ecology and Conservation at the University of Lincoln. She has previously completed work experience at the Allerton Project and has also studied freshwater invertebrates.

What is your favourite GWCT wildlife project or initiative?

My favourite GWCT project would have to be the Sussex Study. Long-term monitoring of invertebrates is so important in assessing overall environmental quality, and the fact that it’s the longest-running study of its kind in the world is incredible!

What is the best thing about your job?

My favourite thing about my placement here at the GWCT is that it has allowed me to be involved in the fight against environmental damage and climate change. Instead of feeling hopeless, I’m able to contribute to scientific understanding, whether it’s through data entry, insect identification for long-term monitoring projects or conducting fieldwork, I know the work I’m doing is valuable, and the research that comes from it is developing sustainable agricultural practices within the UK.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

I would tell her, ‘It’s your life and your career, not anyone else’s and you should be proud of yourself.’
